Hugh Hewitt and his producer Generalissimo Duane are working up a co-ordinated review of the documents released for the John Roberts nomination. I (Colonel Steve), have volunteered to review one “Box O'Docs” in this series of documents.
The complete set of documents can be found at http://www.reagan.utexas.edu/roberts/
My particular box is the set:
http://www.reagan.utexas.edu/roberts/Box44JGRProBono6.pdf
This set has a number of different cases for the White House to review.
PATCO strike
A Margaret Czerwinski had a son who was caught up in the PATCO strike. Seems he was out on sick leave during the strike and was wishing to have his job re-instated. John Roberts advised having the letter forwarded the the FAA Chief Counsel. Looks like Mrs. Czerwinski was notified within 2 weeks of the referral to the FAA. Very quick response on Robert's part.
My cynical nature would think that the MSM might make a deal out of the pawning off of the letter to some other group. I would counter that the White House and John Roberts forwarded it to the Agency most in control.
Request to Intervene in South Carolina vs. Regan
This request by the National Governor's Association was to speed up the review of the Supreme Court due to an upcoming recess. Robert's response, found after the Michael Jackson paperwork, was basically to have NGA speak with the Justice Department directly, rather than move through the White House.
Not much here for MSM to complain about.
Billboard Magazine request to recognize Michael Jackson
This was the famous request for the White House to make a public recognition of Michael Jackson's work against Drunk Driving. As noble as this sounds, John Roberts took the correct stand in saying: “The Office of Presidential Correspondence is not yet an adjunct of Michael Jackson's PR firm.”
MSM quotes already:
Washington Post
BBC
Blogger's posts:
Captain's Quarters
And, according to these stories, there are other memos concerning Jackson to be found in the other boxes.
Washington Post ad for “Season of Spoils”
Seems an ad for the book “Season of Spoils” quoted Ronald Reagan as saying “I'll have to read this book.” Robert's answer was “The use of the quotation violates our policy of not approving any use of the President's name in a manner that could be construed as an endorsement of a commercial product or enterprise.” He went on to say that nothing could be done if Pantheon (the folks behind the ad) should choose to ignore the warning.
Again, I don't think there's much the MSM could complain about this one.
Complaint of corruption in U.S. Virgin Island
A complaint of corruption in the Virgin Isles that was forwarded to the Justice Department. Like, what else could he do????
John Carbaugh observing Guatemalan Elections
Roberts response was to a request making sure that John Carbaugh was OK to observe the elections in Guatemala due to business dealing he had there. John Roberts' response was that, as long as no business dealings took place during the visit, this was OK with them.
No news of any problems with this visit has occurred since the July elections. Barring digging up any dirt on this, I don't see any way that problems with this advice could become a big deal.
