Katrina did not succeed in drowning the nation, so it is time for government to finish the job. Matt Drudge highlighted this article: Katrina Ushers in Return of Big Government. It is hard to describe how disgusted I am.
I used to think that when the Republicans got control of Congress and the White House that they would fight to reduce taxes and cut spending. I used to say that the reason deficits rose during the Reagan years was because the Democrats controlled Congress.
Now the hard truth has been learned. A majoritarian Republican is the same thing as a moderate Democrat. Oh, there are some exceptions, I imagine. One senator is quoted in the article:
"It is inexcusable for the White House and Congress to not even make the effort to find at least some offsets to this new spending," said Sen. Tom Coburn, R-Okla. "No one in America believes the federal government is operating at peak efficiency and can't tighten its belt."
Amen to that. Government does not operate efficiently. The larger it gets, the less efficient it gets. And, sad to say, under President Bush it continues to grow larger.
I recognize that the Feds will have to lay out some cash to rebuild after Katrina. To some degree I don't have a problem with that. There is so much pork in the budget, though, that I wouldn't be surpised if we could build two cities of New Orleans and still have some left over.
Maybe the Republicans in Congress and in the White House think that since they have control they do not have to work hard to represent us. With that type of attitude, they will not be in control for long.
