I think he did. President Bush nominated Samuel Alito to be the next Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States. I'm not a lawyer, but everything I've heard about this guy is impressive. The conservative voice was heard!

A group of 51 of New Orlean's finest (????) have been fired. My opinion: 'bout time.
Where else has something like this happened? Did Mississippi officers shirk their duty during Katrina? How about Texas officers during Rita, or Florida officers during Wilma or other storms previously? No wonder they were looking for FEMA and the military to bail them out...they were totally incapable of doing it themselves.
Maybe there have been a few officers who had to help out their families, but the mass of them that failed to report or later resigned and left town is way above normal. As in unheard of.

Tomorrow morning, I get the privilege of doing some Saturday work, installing new software into our company's production system. Then, soon afterwards, I'll be driving off "into the sunset" (OK, south really, but I kinda like the drama of sunsets, anyway).

What, you say, only adults going? I guess that's the nice thing of being empty nest'ers. We look like some of the Disney commercials showing only adults on vacation.
However, we are adding a little excitement this year. For those who have been reading awhile, we are currently training a service dog for Paws with Purpose. Nice thing about that...we can take him everywhere, since he is officially in training. Disney is known for going all out in their hospitality for assistance dogs.
Should be interesting. Between things, I might even blog a little!

Many, many hours later, I now look over all the opining on the Mier's withdrawal today. I've wondered myself "what do I wish to say?" After thinking and reading awhile, I must admit that Captain Ed at Captain's Quarters sums up my thoughts very well. I wonder that, when writing today, if he at times was reading my mind.
I really haven't thought out what a top choice might be, so anyone, including Janice Rogers Brown, would be a top pick. However, his list of folks, without an order, would be similar to mine.
I do very much agree with his last paragraph:
We want the best candidate for the job this time around, not just the most politically expedient. The conservative/libertarian coalition worked d**ned hard to provide the Republicans with the White House and a significant majority in the Senate. If they can't take advantage of it, they will see it slip away as their base loses faith in the party leadership. Each Supreme Court nomination amounts to the Super Bowl for that unity, and the White House should start to act as though it understands that.

Earlier, I spoke of the blogger's poll Truth Laid Bear is doing on the Miers nomination (current results here).
Professor Bainbridge is currently doing a reader's poll on the same subject. Rather ironicly, his results show trending almost identical to the poll of bloggers. You can vote or view the poll yourself.
I find the esteemed professor's homework assignment an intriguing one:
My reader's poll has been steady at 71% against the Miers nomination (go vote now), which oddly enough is almost exactly the same margin as in TTLB's blogger poll. Go find some polling data on how many self-identified Republicans regularly read blogs. Multiply that number by 71%. If the product is > 3% of the GOP base, my friend Hugh has a problem.
Is it coincedental that a) something like 70% of polls on Miers are on the No side, and b) President Bush's poll numbers are among his lowest of his whole term. There's more to poll numbers than just SCOTUS nominations, but I don't think this nomination has helped his numbers any.

I generally try to keep up with a lotta different blogs, as you may notice with the links on either side of the blog. I particularly try keeping up with fellow Louivillian's (or lu-a-vull-ian's). GotDesign is one of them, and Aaron has posted recently that as of Friday, he has lost his job.
I don't personally know Aaron to know what all his resume has to offer, but from his site I can tell he's a real artist. Anyone know of a lead, I'm sure it would be much appreciated.

I've never, ever been a fan of so called reality TV. I mean, think about it, how much "real" stuff do these folks do on the shows? Get stuck on a deserted island? Race around the world? Get locked up with a bunch of others for awhile in one house? I mean, please, get real, ok?
Yea, I know, "real" reality would be so boring. Following someone as they get up, go to work, come home, and go to bed. The grossest thing they may do all day is change diapers on their kid, and who wants to watch that.
That's why I found the following soooo believable. It seems, according to Norma Meyer at the Copley News Service, that reality is more scripted than we think.
So, it's not reality? Who'd a thunk?

Today, World Magazine' Blog referred to a Wall Street Journal article entitled "Church Ladies: Women dominate America's pews. Is that a problem?"
The statistics mentioned that the typical U.S. congregation is 61% female. I find this rather interesting, since I'm part of the 39%. It does go on to mention that the mainline denominations skew the most in the female to male ratio, with the more conservative denominations having more of a balanced ratio.
As one who attends a conservative congregation, I sure see the more even ratio. Our pastor even talks about when ladies visit our church by themselves. They comment later on the excitement they personally have in seeing so many men worshipping on a Sunday morning. I'm honored to be one of them.
Many of the opinion posters to the World Mag Blog have various opinions as to the problem. I offer a suggestion of my own. Churches that attract men are ones that minister to the make-up of the male; ones that allow them to be challenged, to be builders, and to be allowed to take risks. Take that away, and their numbers go down. Way down, as the mainline churches have seen.
A church that attacts both male and female is a church that allows them both to operate as God designed them. Men as risk-takers, women as nurturers. When a church tries to mold a gender to act like the other, they all lose.
Ladies, thank you for who you are. Maybe us men can be who we are.
