Over the past few years, Lady Colonel and I have worked in the pre-marital ministry at our church. One of the things we worked thru with the engaged couples was the book and video "The Five Love Languages" by Dr. Gary Chapman.
One thing he discusses is the initial stages of love that he calls "the tingles". I'm sure you remember those days. Days of dreaming about him/her, thinking I can't live without him/her, staying up at night thinking about him/her, etc. Dr. Chapman spoke of studies that showed that this "tingle" time period lasted, on average, about 2 years.
Looks like molecular biology studies have caught up with psychology. It seems there is a "love" molocule (Nerve Growth Factor) that resides in higher levels in those with the tingles. Their studies showed this high level lasting about a year.
Maybe we now have an excuse for all those puppy love things we do in our youth.
