World Net Daily today posted the results of a poll stating that "70% of evangelicals see global warming threat". This poll, conducted by Ellison Research, seems to suggest that the majority of evangelicals agree with the 85 leaders who signed Evangelical Climate Initiative (signers listed here).
Personally, I'm thinking this marks another time leaders in the church have weighed in on the wrong side of science. Similar to the church's stand against Copernicus and Galileo.
Should we care about pollution? Sure. Have we influenced weather by our activity? Yes. But temperature cycles have been occurring in nature long before man became industrialized. Those cycles have swung in greater magnitudes than man alone could ever dream of doing.
I wish to agree with Cal Thomas' thoughts: "If evangelicals make the environment another 'cause,' they are likely to be as frustrated and disappointed as when they exercised misplaced faith in politics to cure other social evils. Should they desire a real effect on the planet, let them return to the eternal message that has been given them to share with a world that needs it now more than ever."
