We've been rightfully worried as to all the things going on south of our borders. As in south of Arizona and California. Now it looks like those of us in Kentucky needed to be worried about our southern border...with Tennessee.
The state has been issuing driving certificates to immigrants under the thought of making sure they understood local driving regulations. The documents boldly stated in large print that they were for driving, not for identification. However, "federal prosecutors say banks accepted them as legal identification and they could be passed off as official ID at other places". Also:
A dozen people pleaded guilty in recent months after two federal investigations found shuttles from as far away as New Jersey had brought South and Central American immigrants with fake residency papers to get certificates at state licensing centers in Knoxville.
In January, federal prosecutors filed charges that state license examiners in Murfreesboro accepted bribes to provide out-of-state illegal immigrants with driver's licenses and certificates. Two people were sentenced to two years in prison after pleading guilty, and others are awaiting trial.
The governor has put this program on hold, to sort out all that's going on. As expected, the ACLU of Tennessee wants them to get back to issuing the papers.
So the next time you see what looks like a Tennessee drivers license.......
