Nice to see gas heading the better way ---- down!
Several around the country are hoping for gas to hit $2.50 in their area. Up the street from us today it dropped to $2.51, with a national average around $2.80 or so. If we're lucky, we'll see it get back closer to $2.00 rather than $3.00.
Don't forget - dropping prices has gotta be Bush's fault!

What a way to get fired! 400 Radio Shack employees in Fort Worth were told by email that their services were no longer needed. Granted, they had been told earlier that notices would go out electronically.
Sound sooooo cold and impersonal, no matter the circumstances.

For more than a few bucks, you could buy a little TV history. The S. S. Minnow from Gilligan's Island is up for sale at Canadian $99,000. Or, for a few more bits of TV history, you could bid on any of 1,000 props from the Star Trek TV and movie series.
Intriguing to say the least, but I think I'll be saving my money.

Business First of Louisville reports that Kentucky ranks 7th worst in taxes for businesses. Indiana, on the other hand, is 11th best for taxing businesses.
Lately Kentucky has changed the tax structure to supposedly make it more enticing for businesses to move to the state. I'd say they have a lot further to go.

Couple of follow ups on yesterday's plane crash in Lexington:
1) Conservative Edge writer Leland Conway notes in a post about the evacuation problems of the aircraft:
Our source tells us that it was obvious at the crash site that many of the victims survived the initial impact, but died trying to escape the plane. The CJ200 model has three emergency exits, two of which are directly over the wings on either side of the fuselage. This is significant because the fuel tanks on this plane are located on the wings and this is where the hottest part of the fire was burning. Recovery workers on the site believe that it would have been impossible to escape because of this.
In a previous post, he noted that when the passengers were found, they were no longer strapped to their seats. Much as the Carrollton, KY bus crash caused the addition of strategically placed emergency exits on buses, hopefully the same will be thought out about aircraft construction.
2) Many blogs have been commenting about the plane crash skit that was left in the Emmy show on NBC last night. You can see much of the roundup at this post at HotAir.
I am struck by many of the insensitive comments left on some blogs, and even insensitive posts on a particular blog. I realize that much of this post was to slam Conan O'Brian and NBC, in that many people will remember the accident but won't remember the skit. However, to include the statement "So we mourn the tragic loss of 49 lives in Kentucky, blah blah blah" is rather cruel. Maybe I don't get it. Maybe mourning is a serious thing for some of us, that we'd take a comment like that as an insult. Maybe some of us respect those in mourning a little more than that.

This morning a flight from Lexington, KY to Atlanta crashed soon after takeoff outside of Lexington. Possibly one survivor out of 50 on-board.
UPDATE: The one survivor was the co-pilot of the aircraft. Early indications are that the aircraft took off from the shorter of two runways at LEX, used for daylight takeoffs. At time of takeoff this morning at 6:10am, it remained dark. Runway is 3,500 feet in length. A Bombardier CRJ 200ER requires a minimum of 5,200 feet when filled to 80% of maximum weight according to Federal Aviation Regulations.

When looking for synonyms in the thesaurus, no doubt logic will not be one of the words synonymous with the democratic party.
Two cases in point:
1) Take the 2002 senatorial election in New Jersey and contrast it to this year's house election in Texas. Democrats wanted to be able to replace Robert Torricelli on the NJ ballot due to his resignation over corruption charges. They were allowed. But in 2006, they successfully blocked republicans from doing the same thing.
2) Recently it got worse. After democrats fled Joe Lieberman in Conneticut, they now wish him to campaign for these same democrats (HT: Captain's Quarters).
Huh? The only thing in common with both is that democrats will do ANYTHING to win, no matter how much sense it makes.

Drudge noted today one instance where the recent warm phase of the earth's climate has actually caused glaciers to grow. You read that right, grow.
The western Himalayas have seen their glaciers grow due to recent warmer winters, cooler summers, and more rainfall and snowfall. This has been a big deal due to the impact this has had on Pakistan's water supply.
On another weather note, the space shuttle Atlantis' August 27th launch experienced a lightning strike at the launch pad. The electronics on-board are being checked for any possible damage.
A similar strike occurred last month prior to Discovery's launch, with no ill effect on it's launch.
The greater chance of changing Atlantis' mission will come from tropical storm Ernesto's eventual path. If it affects Houston such that mission control has to evacuate, the docking portion of the mission won't be taking place. This will affect the use equipment that is delivered for more construction on the International Space Station.

Saturday night I'll be taking a trip up to "Member's night" at the Louisville Astronomical Society's observatory. Something tells me many of the scopes set up that evening will at some time be pointing to the extreme south and southwest. Poor old Pluto will be hanging out in that vicinity.
Whether that rock is defined as a planet, a dwarf planet, or something else all together, it'll still be remembered as being one of the first things discovered "way out" past Neptune. Some of us will have a hard time breaking old habits of counting nine planets.

Louisville teacher Dan Holden had every intention to get his students thinking about free speech when he lit a couple of American flags. It's now become more than just his students at Stuart Middle School who are exercising their free speech.
When I first saw the story a free speech idea crossed my mind as well. Remember all those computers they've been installing in our schools? Sounds like a great tool to teach our kids blogging on!
