Cold Wave on It's Way

This afternoon, a little after 4pm, I was ironically on a roof of a building testing out a set of newly installed weather instruments.  As we were working, we noted the wind vane change directions with the wind coming in from the Northwest.  It wasn't too much longer before we felt what you see above, with a serious drop in temps.

We knew it was a coming, but it was still neat to be "hanging out" while it happened.

'Course, we've got more serious drops happening between 6am and 8am tomorrow morning.  Current forecasts show our temps topping out around 55 to 60 until somewhere after 6am, and then dropping to the mid 40s by 8am and down to the low 30s by noon.

Brrrrrrr.

CNN Banned From Hotel Chain

If you find yourself traveling in Illinois, Missouri, Iowa, or Wisconsin, you might want to look up a Stoney Creek Hospitality Corp. hotel.  They have taken CNN off their TV channels offered due to the Anderson Cooper 360 October 18th showing of a sniper killing a U.S. serviceman.

Guests have shown their support, with 3 to 1 in favor of Stoney Creek's move.

More Gender Differences

As I've stated before, I'm always amazed as to the grand differences God has created into men and women.  Now science has "discovered" some facts we've intuitively known all along.

It is something one half of the population has long suspected - and the other half always vocally denied. Women really do talk more than men.

In fact, women talk almost three times as much as men, with the average woman chalking up 20,000 words in a day - 13,000 more than the average man.

Women also speak more quickly, devote more brainpower to chit-chat - and actually get a buzz out of hearing their own voices, a new book suggests.

In the book, The Female Brain, Dr Luan Brizendine spells out many of the differences such as this.  Also, in a very un-PC statement, she says:

"Girls arrive already wired as girls, and boys arrive already wired as boys. Their brains are different by the time they're born, and their brains are what drive their impulses, values and their very reality.

I know it is not politically correct to say this but I've been torn for years between my politics and what science is telling us.

I believe women actually perceive the world differently from men.

If women attend to those differences they can make better decisions about how to manage their lives."

Wise outlook.

Christmas Story Booted From Christmas Celebration

The folks at the German Christkindlmarket Christmas celebrations have chosen to remove the Christmas story from the Christmas celebration.  This is in the form of removing advertisements of "The Nativity Story" movie from their Christmas celebration.  This is due to the organizers believing that the story of Christ during a Christmas celebration would be offensive to non-Christians.

Christmas is about Christ?  Who woulda thought that?

Louisville Area Megachurches

The CJ today reports on the local area megachurches (those with over 2,000 in attendance each week).  In total, we're talking 9 churches in the mega category.

Megachurches are not only growing in size, but also in numbers.  "A report by the Hartford institute identified 1,210 megachurches nationally in 2005, nearly twice what it counted five years earlier."

Or so says some anti-war activists, including Casey Sheehan's mom.

Some folks might think this is some sort of Photoshop magic or trick.  Nah.  Just check out one of the sources.

According to John Kerry's famous recent quote, shouldn't this kind of spelling be coming from our troops "stuck" in Iraq without an education?  Surely not from a more intelligent liberal?

Early Shopping

I, like Glenn Reynolds, have already done a lot of my early Christmas shopping at my usual place.  Like a lot of geeks, I'll be venturing into the brick-and-mortar places less and visiting the online places and keeping the shipping companies in business as well.

Hubble's Top Ten Space Photos

Since it's launch in 1990, the Hubble telescope has taken many a spectacular shot of the heavens.  Now astronomers have voted on the top ten pictures (See the pop-up link in the above article).

Each week, Hubble sends down 120 gigabytes of information.  Soon, NASA will be repairing the telescope to keep the data flowing for many years to come.

Lighting Up the House

Today's the traditional day for Light Up Louisville, as well as lighting up our house.  Granted, it sure doesn't look like downtown Louisville (pictured here), nor are 100,000 people in attendance (only 8).  But that's ok, because we all had a grand time.

Our running joke about putting up lights concerns Lady Colonel's desire to have MANY lights on the front side of the house.  Usually, we're commenting about having a Griswold Christmas, just waiting for the local power plants to go into overdrive.

The evening usually turns out to be a time where, as we're hanging up all those lights and ornaments, we end up discussing Christmas wish lists.  Now Lady Colonel and I have something to shop for.
