A Washington Times article linked at the Drudge Report claims that John McCain has gained political capital as a result of this election. He was one of the reasons Republicans lost! If Republicans in leadership had been true to their conservative base (this includes the President, mind you), they would have had an energized base going to the polls. Instead, the nominal Republicans in the Senate squandered their 2004 momentum and tried play nice with Democrats. Problem is, Democrats don't play nice; they play to win.
If John McCain or Rudy Giuliani succeed in becoming the party's nominee for President in 2008, the base will continue to be unenthusiastic and the Democrats will maintain control. The one caveat to that is that it is certainly possible, even likely, that the Democrats will jeopardize the country enough in the next two years that people may again realize why they threw them out of office in 1994.
