Scientists in Great Britain have invented a vaccine that may be a cure for many, if not all, outbreaks of Influenza type A. This would include the potential upcoming bird flu.
Current flu vaccines focus on two proteins on the surface of the virus. However, these constantly mutate in a bid to fool the immune system, making it impossible for vaccine manufacturers to keep up with the creation of each new strain.
The universal vaccines focus on a different protein called M2, which has barely changed during the last 100 years.
The protein is found in all types of Influenza A, including the current bird flu and the virus that caused the 1918 Spanish flu pandemic which killed up to 50 million across the globe.
This vaccine has already been tested on mice with promising results. The vaccinated mice were later injected with enough flu to kill them four times over, with not even a fever to show for it.
Fox News is reporting that Saddam may be executed prior to the New Year.

Incoming Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid will miss the state funeral for former President Gerald Ford at the Capitol Rotunda on Saturday night, opting instead to lead a delegation to South America with an expected stop at the Machu Picchu Inca ruins.
Inca ruins, or honoring the death of an American President? Tough choice for some people.

This past Friday, the Wall Street Journal published a review of the book Who Really Cares: The Surprising Truth about Compassionate Conservatism, by Arthur C. Brooks
What's surprising about the book and the review is that both author and reviewer are liberals. Both folks, through two different paths, come to the conclusion that the most caring among us tend to be conservatives rather than liberals. Mr. McClay came to his conclusion from many examples he's seen in his life. Of the author, McClay writes that "Brooks speaks here (in his book) with the authority of a liberal who has been mugged by the data." Brooks' own emperical research led him to the conclusion that, yes, conservatives were actually more caring than he ever imagined.
The book itself looks like one I just might add to my next shopping list.

The folks at NORAD will be busy today looking in the skies for Santa. Check out their Santa site.
We'll see in a few days how it all pans out, but the current forecasts show snow coming into Louisville at 11pm on Monday. One hour of snowfall sure doesn't make a white Christmas!
The following chart shows the most recent North American Mesoscale (NAM) forecast. These weather guys must like reading backwards (right to left). It show precipitation from 7am Monday thru 7am Tuesday, with the blue (snow) starting at 11pm Monday. It'll all depend on the track of a low pressure system heading towards Louisville (noted by the big drop in pressure of the white line). Depending on that, our travels back to work Tuesday morning could be real fun!

What do you call a politician who hides his or her true feelings in order to get elected? Pragmatic and common. What do you call one who does this really well? Clintonian. From Dean Barnett's description, it sounds like Mitt Romney falls into the Clintonian category. He is supposedly conservative, but hid that well enough to be elected governor in a very blue state.
I assume since some conservatives seem pretty high on Romney that he has governed largely as a conservative. I haven't looked closely at his record, yet. But I have to admit some discomfort with politicians who say that at their core they are one way but campaign otherwise. It sounds kind of like lying, to me. Of course, that may depend on what your definition of lying is. Or, perhaps, what your definiton of "is" is?
I haven't made a decision about who I like for 2008. I know that, as much as I respect them, I don't want Rudy Giuliani or John McCain as my president. I have not eliminated Mitt Romney, but I can't say I have a lot of enthusiasm for him, either.
