There's a new television series on TNT called "Saving Grace" about a "hard-living detective" named Grace who is given a last chance of avoiding hell. God does this through visitations by a tobacco-chewing angel named Earl.
When I first heard about the series, I wondered if they would use a song called "Saving Grace" by Point of Grace from their Steady On album as a theme song. A few lines (two lines of verse, two of chorus) of the song are
Grace is lost and alone in a world as cold as stone
God is counting on us to reach her with His love --
It's all about saving grace, all about being love,
Being Jesus to those He came to save
But that wasn't the theme song. Pity. It fits well.
Anyway, the show was uncomfortably racy. I found myself fast-forwarding a lot. But it does speak some truth. God pursues us. Most of us don't get the angel treatment, but rather, it's a gradual drawing towards Himself until we say, "Yes," or we say, "No." The Apostle Peter wrote that "God is not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance." But He does allow us to say, "No."
Thus far the show has been all about God and the angel Earl. Will Jesus show up? Salvation is only through trusting in Jesus, acknowledging His death, burial, and resurrection. Grace won't get saved unless Jesus is involved and most television shows stay away from Him. If they are brave enough to acknowledge hell, though, might they go all the way?
So, maybe Grace will eventually say, "Yes" to God, but that's just television. There are billions of people in real life who need to hear how God is pursuing them because of His love for them. And how just by putting their trust in Jesus they can escape the just punishment for their rebellion against Him (sin). It really is all about saving grace...
