Most evangelical Christians seem to believe the young-earth theory of creation that has God creating the universe in seven 24-hour days. Many others subscribe to variations of old-earth creation in which the "day" described in the first chapter of Genesis is a secret code for some specified "age" of time.
Most Christians have either never heard of the Gap Theory or never paid much attention to it. The Gap Theory says that the first verse in Genesis should be considered separately from the "days" of creation that follow it.
1. In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.
According to this theory, the verses that follow actually refer to a re-creation of the universe after some cataclysm has left the earth "formless and void." This allows for a very old universe as well as seven literal 24-hour days of re-creation.
A friend of mine has written a new book, "In the Beginnings: A Defense of the Biblical Gap Theory of Creation." From the back of the book:
This book takes an in-depth look at both the science and the Bible. Its purpose is to show how the Gap Theory better fits the scientific and biblical facts.
I personally believe the Gap Theory matches biblical and scientific facts much better than either the young-earth or day-age models. I don't always agree with Dr. Dill's analysis but his basic premise is spot on.
Is there a Gap in your thinking? Read the book and find out.
