The University of Louisville has received an IBM super computer.
The university has taken delivery of an IBM
supercomputer capable of 25 trillion calculations per second. IBM and U
of L said it is one of the 500 most powerful computers in the world.
The supercomputer is a cluster of computers linked to operate as one
machine. The cluster has 100 terrabytes, or 102,400 gigabytes of usable
space, and 5.2 terabytes, or 5,325 gigabytes of memory, the university
said in a news release.
Wow. Back in the days when I was there, programming in FORTRAN, PL/I and Assembler, we were still using punch cards. Man, do I date myself! What we could've done with this machine, versus waiting hours for batch compiles to return from the shared state computer at UK.
Not that I'm calling them the good ol' days!
