April 25th, 1976 has an event that has been listed as one of the top 100 greatest moments in Major League Baseball's history.
On the 100th anniversary of their very first game, the Chicago Cubs
were in Los Angeles to face the Dodgers. Before the Dodgers went to bat
in the bottom of the fourth inning, two protesters ran onto the field
and prepared to set fire to an American flag. That was when Cubs center
fielder Rick Monday swooped in and picked up the flag, receiving a
standing ovation from the crowd.
Hear Rick's own words concerning this move.
One quote of Rick's:
"From time to time, people ask, 'are you upset
because you spent nineteen seasons in the major leagues and you're
known for, primarily, stopping two people from burning the flag?' If
that's all you're known for, that's not a bad thing at all."
Amen, Rick.
Rick Monday himself spent six years in service with the Marines. To him, and to all our military past and present, thank you for your service to us, our country, and our flag.
