I regularly read an online science fiction comic called Crimson Dark, by David Simon. Today the author, in his comments, mentioned another comic whose author, Matt, was fired for making a comment at work the day after the Virginia Tech shootings about a gun he was planning to buy. Then Matt wrote about it in his comic and, guess what? He's now under investigation for terrorism.
I can understand that people are a little nervous about workplace shootings. It is certainly a good idea to pay attention when associates start talking about guns. But there is a huge difference between talking about guns as an enthusiast and talking about guns with the intent to damage someone or something. Where was the intent, here?
It makes me wonder about communication in the future (especially in the future as liberals see it). I can imagine how conversations will work:
"Hello, Nancy," said Hugh. Nancy looks up the possible responses to that statement in her personal conversation computer (PCC). The results pop up on the heads-up display in her glasses:
A. Hello
B. Hi, how are you?
She chooses B. Hugh responds, "I'm doing well, and you?" Nancy looks up his response in her PCC and replies, "Oh, I'm doing fine." Hugh shakes his head and says, "How about this weather?" Nancy's PCC flashes a warning that Hugh's statement could be interpreted multiple ways. She says, "It is incredibly hot, isn't it." Surprised, Hugh responds "Hot? But it's 10 degrees and there's a blizzard outside! " Nancy's PCC flashes red: "GLOBAL WARMING DENIER! Keep fanatic calm while police are summoned."
