Fourth of July Weekends

Fourth of July Weekends usually means family time for most Americans.  For us, this weekend means a family reunion.  Later today, like 50-60 folks from the Lady Colonel side of the family will all converge on the Colonel house. 

Wow!

Right now, I have a powerpoint presentation running with many pics of the family running across our big screen TV.  Looking at it, I realize the history of military service the family has.  So appropriate, then, to have the reunion this weekend, when we celebrate our nation's beginnings.

I better get busy.  Burgers to cook and all........

What Are You Doing On Independence Day?

While we all are celebrating our Independence Day, these folks re-committed themselves to serving us:

While most Americans probably slept, 1,215 Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, and Marines raised their right hands and committed to a combined 5,500 years of additional service during the largest reenlistment ceremony in the history of the American military. Beneath a large American flag which dwarfed even the enormous chandelier that Saddam Hussein had built for the Al Faw Palace, members of all services, representing all 50 states took the oath administered by Gen. David Petraeus, Commander of Multi-National Forces Iraq.

I am in awe of your sacrifice.  Thank you.

Citizenship Test

On this Fourth of July, where we celebrate our Independence, it's nice to reflect back on the blessings we have being a citizen of this great country.

A friend passed on to me a quiz set up using 20 of the questions used in the citizenship test.  Try it. 

Just curious....did you pass?  For those who were born citizens, did it make you glad you didn't have to take the test?

Google's Latest Celebration

On the 64th anniversary of D-day (June 6th, 2008), Google decided to celebrate something else.  It was the 409th birthday of the Spanish painter Diego Velázquez.

As nice as Spanish history is, I think I'll stick with honoring those who both lived thru and died on the French shores on D-Day, June 6th, 1944.  Their bravery may have been forgotten by Google, but not by me.

Google's Latest Celebration

Google's famous ignoring of days like Memorial Day, but remembering some little things, continues.  Google celebrated yesterday's anniversary of the first public demonstration of a hot air balloon by the Montgolfier brothers of Annonay, France.

It maybe a good thing in world technology history.  Still misses American history of our brave men and women in the military.

Little Green Footballs makes the case that Google still is not getting a clue concerning Memorial Day.  They have changed logos to celebrate everything from legos to Earth Day.  But still no Memorial Day
"celebration".

Who Is This Baby?

"Do not be afraid; for behold, I bring you good news of great joy which will be for all the people; for today in the city of David there has been born for you a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. This will be a sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger."

Luke 2:10-12

For a child will be born to us, a son will be given to us; And the government will rest on His shoulders; And His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace.

Shop Online and Save the Planet

I knew shopping online had it's merits.  But heh, now I'm helping Al Gore out as well.  The Oak Ridge National Laboratory has figured that even a little drop in mall shopping can save tons of greenhouse emmisions.

Santa Hillary

For those who haven't seen Hillary's Christmas ad, take a peek over at Power Line.

In reference to handouts, I'm so reminded of a quote a former pastor once said: "My name's Jimmy and I'll take all you gimme."  Hillary is proving she's all about handouts and what the government can do for you.

Considering just how well government does things, I'm sure turned off.  Looks like another case of purchasing votes with my tax dollars.

Have a Safe and Cheap Holiday Travel

As you travel this Christmas, you might want to note the most expensive states to pick up a speeding ticket.  The top 5 most expensive are Virginia, Georgia, North Carolina, Maryland and New Hampshire.  "All hit up speeders for a maximum of $500 or more for a first offense. Judges in Carolina and Georgia, not to mention 16 other states, have the discretion to add jail time."

Ouch.  Not the best way to spend the holidays.
